It’s distinctly possible that I’m missing something, but as far as I can tell so far, it isn’t possible for a new user (lacking ‘Basic’ permission) to send a private message to a user. I understand I’m supposed to be able to click on a user’s avatar and see a ‘mail’ icon, but no such icon appears:
After some searching, I have discovered an explanation for the ‘trust levels’ and how to get promoted to basic trust (“Entering at least 5 topics, Reading at least 30 posts, Spend a total of 10 minutes reading posts”), but I thought I should point this out here for future users who might be confused about this as well.
