Explore Projects: Trending is Empty, but All/Most stars has Projects

I’ve got one project in a self-hosted gitlab. I notice that after a new person logs in and browses public projects that a common complaint is that they don’t see any projects. The problem is that by default, Trending is the selected tab under Explore Projects. This tab shows no projects. However, the Most stars and the All tabs do show the one public project.

How do I get the public project to show under Trending? I’ve got about a dozen people currently subscribed to my gitlab that are using this project and several of them have starred the project. I’ve had to tell every person to click on the All or Most stars tab to see the project. Is there something I need to do?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Anyone with an idea on why this happens? I have this same problem with two Gitlab CE installations. Is there anything that needs to be configured so that the Trending projects list gets populated? I have not managed to find any relevant documentation, apart from a merge request (https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce/merge_requests/6749).
