Getting "Access denied for your LDAP account" for new logins

We are getting the message “Access denied for your LDAP account” for LDAP logins for users who have never logged in before. This just started recently, and the system is at Gitlab CE 15.11.3, but not sure what version it started happening with.

One key thing is that our LDAP system is not providing an email address, so the initial email address used to be set to some weird one that did not exist. Is it no longer possible to create a new account when LDAP doesn’t provide an email address? Or is this some other issue?

Is it possible to configure the LDAP settings to create a valid email address? This is possible from the uid and a specific domain name.
