This might be related to this issue with gitlab.com diffs

Gitlab diff does not support Unicode General

We use NSIS for installers for multiple languages, so have to save NSIS .NSI files as Unicode. When this is done the file is able to be diffed using WinMerge on a Windows P.C. However, in Gitlab it only shows the contents of both versions with no highlighted differences found. [2021-01-05 13_55_21-Window]
