Updating from 11.6.10 CE to the latest

Hello , I am sorry probably this kind of question has been asked many times , so I apologise with the community if I am another noob dude with the same usual question …

I have managed to upgrade gitlab to 11.6.10 CE ( version ) but now I am not quite sure which path I need to follow to continue to upgrade to the latest , from the gitlab site I can see there are many version is my next step upgrade from 11.6.10 CE to 10.7.4 CE ? I am so confused , can someone with some experience suggest how to go from 11.6.10 to the latest ?

Thank you !

10.7.4 would be a downgrade from 11.6.10. Do you mean 11.7.4? That would be step in the right direction (and probably work), but given that there are newer versions in the 11.7 series, it would be a weird step.

https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/policy/maintenance.html

contains lots of information on upgrading and choosing upgrade paths.

Hi Grove , yes you right was my miss typed mistake ( and I have read three times before send … ) , I was meaning from 11.6 to 11.7 ,anyway I took a leap of faith and I was able to rich 11.11.8 , now I guess the next step is from 11.11.8 is 12.0.8 ( I guess )

Thank you Grove , this is my first time upgrading an old gitlab to the latest so I am a bit itching …

Once again the version you’re mentioning would be a weird step, 12.0.8 is not the latest in the 12.0 series, that would be 12.0.12. I have a vague memory that you shouldn’t skip too many versions when upgrading to 12.x, but I also believe the omnibus packages warned (and failed) appropriately, and that 11.11.8 to 12.0.12 should be possible.

Hi @Loud_99,

Exactly as @grove mentioned, https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/policy/maintenance.html contains a lot of useful information.
Since you are on 11.11.8 now your upgrade path might look like below:

11.11.8 -> 12.0.12 -> 12.10.6 -> 13.0.0 -> 13.2.0

Thank you Lukasz to confirm and thank you to Grove , one more question if you guys don’t mind , the server I have received is running Ubuntu 16.04 I need eventually to upgrade OS to 18.04 at least , but I was wondering ( last question I promise ) If I can go with gitlab path as you guys suggested and then upgrade Ubuntu or is there any problem with the latest version of gitlab with 16.04 ? So the plan would be upgrade first gitlab to the latest and then run OS upgrade … Thank you so much !

Hi @Loud_99,

I haven’t personally tested 16.04 however on our Requirements page you can find Ubuntu (16.04/18.04) on supported OS list.
