Uploading a New GitLab Project does not work

I went onto our GitLab page and added a new public project. The page told me what to do to upload my new project. Following those instructions fails with the following message:
On branch master
nothing to commit, working tree clean

Here are the instructions from GitLab:

Command line instructions

You can also upload existing files from your computer using the instructions below.

Git global setup

git config --global user.name “Kurt Sanger” git config --global user.email “kurt.sanger@ksanger.com

Create a new repository

git clone git@gitlab.com:frc3838/ancillary-components/frc3838_vision.git cd frc3838_vision touch README.md git add README.md git commit -m “add README”

I did get an empty README.md file added to my local folder.

Push an existing folder

cd existing_folder git init git remote add origin git@gitlab.com:frc3838/ancillary-components/frc3838_vision.git git add .

The add command does change all my shell scripts by replacing with and states that the local files are not changed. This is something I do not want to do as we will be using the shell scripts on linux.

git commit -m “Initial commit”

This line fails with the response:
On branch master
nothing to commit, working tree clean

Push an existing Git repository

cd existing_repo git remote rename origin old-origin git remote add origin git@gitlab.com:frc3838/ancillary-components/frc3838_vision.git

I don’t understand this line. I don’t have a file named origin. I do have a file with my project name though its in lower case.

On the GitLab site we have the message:
The repository for this project is empty

So I don’t know what to do next. Punt?

I am using eclipse to create java. Then copying the files to a pi, compiling on the pi, and running on the pi.

git --version returns 2.21.0.windows.1
