Announcing GitLab's Q1 2022 Hackathon's winners!

This post has been updated after recalculating the points, and the results are final.

Another GitLab hackathon is completed, and I would like to begin by celebrating our contributors! Congratulations to everyone who participated and contributed to GitLab.

For this Hackathon and moving forward, we introduced five contribution areas to make it easier for everyone to contribute.
Accordingly, we will be awarding prizes for each of five areas: Security, Frontend, Backend, Technical Writing, and Website.

Highlights

  • We received 182 MRs from 74 participants across 15 projects.
  • As of the day of this post, 72% (132) MRs have been merged.
  • It is worth mentioning that this has been the most successful Hackathon regarding the number of participants: 74 (we have been averaging 40 people per Hackathon)!
  • Out of 182 MRs, only 2(!) were not contributing to an existing issue!
  • Contributions merged based on each contribution are:
    • Security: 4
    • Backend: 42
    • Frontend: 34
    • Technical Writing: 43
    • Website: 13

What’s next!

How do I get started with contributing?

An excellent place to start is our new Contributing to GitLab page, where you can learn how to contribute GitLab code, documentation, translation, engagement, and UX design.

Hackathon prizes

Following the point system, we calculated each contributor’s points for each contribution area based on whether their MRs were contributing to the issues highlighted on the Hackathon’s page.

Hi @cbacharakis!

I’ve written you an email, but I haven’t heard back, so probably it went to spam. I hope that is okay, I write here directly

I am a bit confused on how points were calculated. I was expecting to have 10 points in the security category, instead I have 5 in frontend and 5 in backend. I did two different MRs, both related to two issues in the security category. How come?

These are the MRs:

Both have the label Security Hackathon.

I am more than happy that my contributions have been recognized, I am asking just so the next time I can focus on the security category

Hi @rpadovani , I have received your email, but I have been away from my computer for the past few days.

I’ve “misplaced” your MRs because of the ~Security Hackathon label not being applied to your MRs.

I will go and review all the MRs again and make the right adjustments. Thanks for the heads up!
