CVS to GitLab Project Migration

We have migrated some of the projects from CVS 1.2 to GitLab Community Edition [11.7.5] some folder tag are a mismatch

exam: we observe that on selecting a particular tag or branch CVS label is not getting changed.
Also a git clone using the branch name checks out all the folders that are not actually tagged to this tag-name in CVS

can you share some concrete examples? I stopped using CVS more than 10 years ago, so some illustration would help, e.g. also in a table from the different commands and output.s
