Freshly installing Gitlab CE 16.2.4 fails. The endpoint is not available in the browser, so I tried reconfigure and got:

A problem which I’ve had before when trying to upgrade Gitlab to a newer version. I could not manage to fix the issue, which is why I tried a clean install, removing all packages and files related to gitlab and starting over. Apparently without success.

Please include at least basic information like: Are you using the embedded Postgres or dedicated instance? What’s your DB config in gitlab.rb? What is the output of gitlab-ctl status?

Not much we can do with just generic connection error…

When refering to “freshly installing” I meant that I did not manually change any settings. This means I use embedded Postgres. And looking at the paths in the error log, this is implied.

gitlab-ctl status output was:

You need to look in DB logs why it fails to start. It’s somewhere in /var/log/gitlab if using Omnibus install.

so it turns out I missed some directories when removing the old Gitlab version. I have this issue:

So I fixed it now by really removing everything there is to Gitlab before reinstalling it:
