Why gitlab pages cannot create symlink inside public/ pointing to './'?

Was trying to make a symlink inside the public/ artifacts, pointing to ‘./’, which means public/,
However, in the deploy stage, it says:

Symlinks cannot be created targeting: ./

It is gitlab.com btw.
