Is there a way to increase limit of diff lines in Gitliab CE version 8.6.3? I’m getting ‘This diff could not be displayed because it is too large’ message.

I found this thread with (out of date) advice …
The file app/models/commit.rb has the variables DIFF_HARD_LIMIT_FILES and DIFF_HARD_LIMIT_LINES but this doesn’t appear to be the source of the limitation. Is anyone more familiar with gitlab internals able to suggest something?
Has anyone figured out how to fix this yet?
