Where to find the "public access directory"?

I’m doing the “GitLab with Git Essentials” course at GitLab University and found the following information:

For public projects, users who are not authenticated, including users with the Guest role, can: View the public access directory (/public).

I searched the documentation but couldn’t find information about the “public access directory”. What is this directory and where can I find it?

I tried <project url>/public but this gives me a HTTP 404.
