Add a private group to my path/account

So,
When I look at my GitLab community account, I can create projects, and even use the API to do this as well. But looking at the system I click on “Groups” and i see a page that says “your groups” but naturally it is currently empty.
Now when I look at “Your Projects” the path is https://gitlab.com/u/[myusername]/projects/
but when i try to create a group it is focusing global. I’ve event tried entering relative paths in the “new group” page:
[myusername]/groupname
u/[myusername]/groupname
u/[myusername]/groups/groupname

but nothing works. I get 500 error every time.
Is it possible for me to create a private “group” to my account that I can then personally provide permissions to other users for?

Thanks
