"Display videos from YouTube" instructions don't work?

I added the (exact) code from Display videos from YouTube into my README.md file, being careful to leave a blank line above and below as described, and even used the same YouTube URL as in the docs…

…and nothing appears. There is no video embedded. What’s wrong?
Thanks.

(I came to GitLab because GitHub was not rendering videos, and saw the aforementioned docs, so was encouraged about being able to do this…)

Hi,

the Markdown guide is for the GitLab handbook on about.gitlab.com which gets rendered by Middleman, a static site generator.

README.md and other Markdown files rendered in GitLab use GitLab flavoured markdown where iframes won’t work.

I’ve recently found a way to embed a YouTube preview image into the flowing text. This is encapsulated by a URL to the actual video. See https://gitlab.com/gitlab-de/workshops/gitlab-cicd-go-tanuki-workshop/-/raw/main/README.md for an example.

I’ve found this feature request IFrame embedding does not work (#282443) · Issues · GitLab.org / GitLab · GitLab - please comment/upvote there.

Cheers,
