Extreme system load when performing upgrades/backup/reconfigure

we’re hosting Gitlab CE as omnibus package on a Ubuntu 14.04 LTS virtual server (2 CPUs, 2 GB RAM, SSD drive). We expercience no performance issues during normal operation.

However, when upgrading Gitlab (e.g. via apt-get upgrade), running gitlab-ctl reconfigure or performing the daily backup (gitlab-rake gitlab:backup:create), we observe extreme high system loads (1 minute average goes up to ~40, 15 minute average up to ~15). All tasks succeed fine, but the machine is not responding to anything while performing these operations. SSH sessions break and monitoring alarms go nuts.

Has anyone ever observed something similar? Any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!
