Not able to login

Hello
Since a few months I have problems with the login process. Often when I want to login i can’t log in because I seem to have to confirm my email address. As soon as I want to do that I don’t get a new link by Email to reset the password. After a few attempts I can usually log in anyway. At the moment I can not log in at all. Not via the web interface and also not via my IDE.
Could you please tell me where the problem is and what I have to do?
thank you,
Roberto

I’m having this issue too, have you had any luck resolving it?

More details:-
Invalid Login or password. - error when I attempt to login with email address
You have to confirm your email address before continuing. Please check your email for the link we sent you, or click 'Resend confirmation email'. - error when I attempt to login with username
1 error prohibited this email from being saved: Email was already confirmed, please try signing in - error when I click the confirmation link in most recent email

Roberto; it would be more helpful if you could provide more information to decipher what is going on.

Which version of gitlab are you using? Is it a self hosted installation or is a hosted solution.

Which distribution ? Enterprise Edition EE or Community Edition. CE ??

Have you ever been able to successfully verify your email address?

I noticed in the latest CE version that you can force email verification if you have administrator access. This can be done in the admin area when you can get in as administrator.

Are you able to get into your console to run command line instructions? This reset doc can help you if that is the case: https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/security/reset_user_password.html

For additional support perhaps providing more information can lead someone to point you in the right direction.

Unfortunately I am still getting my feet wet with gitlab - using the self hosted CE version for a small project. I may be overcomplicating things but gitlab is a great tool and learning to use it has been fun.

Good Luck - Please post your solution if you have found one.

2kah - if you have already confirmed email then you could expect this error.

As with Roberto if you are able to provide more details with your question - details about your environment - Which version you are using etc. it will provide a better chance at a solution - because they can know what known issues are with your version - or the differences between executing a EE or CE version - on managed hosting or self hosting incident.

Thanks for the response, I’m just attempting to log into gitlab.com (https://gitlab.com/users/sign_in). I haven’t yet paid for anything so presumably it’s just the standard CE on managed hosting.

From Gitlab.com I would simply use the "I forgot my password’ from the login prompt. Gitlab will email you password reset instructions to verify you and you should be back in shortly.

Enjoy!

That’s exactly the problem: I have tried this so many times and never received a password reset email.

Yes same for me, sorry I forgot to mention that! I’ve checked my spam folder too but never receive a password reset email.

I have the same issues on Gitlab.com. First I tried connecting with Google; cannot because there is a password linked with the email. Then when through the same messages and loop (need to confirm email, cannot confirm email because it is already confirmed, wrong password, never receive password reset email, etc.). I feel like some services crashed on Gitlab.com side?

*Confirmed. (almost) Password Reset Fails on Gitlab.com from Login Page : Gitlab.com/users/sign_in. TL_dr: I didn’t have the account on gitlab.com - this user only had account on forum.gitlab.com

Warning to check your email address:
" If your email address exists in our database, you will receive a password recovery link at your email address in a few minutes."

Confirmed I am using the proper email address from my user profile. (forum.gitlab.com !? )

Interestingly enough I am logged in with my primary chrome user and I have been able to log into gitlab.com / forum.gitlab.com successfully. However while logged in on one Chrome profile - using the same username and password I am not able to log into the same user as a second instance.

I have triggered the reset password after failing to log in with my 2nd Chrome instance (and user) and I have not received any password reset. so…

I used the password reset link from my gitlab profile only to receive a password reset email !

The kicker here though is that I tried to reset my password to my original password - at which point I was told I could not change my password as it is the existing password.

So I took this to Firefox and my second instance of chrome - and both failed as 'invalid user / password"

I was / am still unable to log in at gitlab.com. however I am able to log into forum.gitlab.com

This leads to the question: Are the Gitlab.com. and forum.gitlab.com users the same or synced between the two domains - or is the gitlab.com service and the forum.gitlab.com different entities / domains. - with separate user accounts.

It feels like these are not the same to me - and honestly I don’t think I did sign up at gitlab.com but only with the forum.gitlab.com

Environment: SelfHosted CE on a Digital Ocean Droplet w/ Ubuntu 18.04 / 8gb ram 25GB disk

So I don’t think I am in the same boat as you all - however there may be clues to the issue here.

Are you using or attempting to use the forum.gitlab.com password for gitlab.com ?

Do let me know if this help and what the final solution is. I’m curious now and may experiment some more…

stay tuned

Hello,
Which version of gitlab are you using? Is it a self hosted installation or is a hosted solution.
=> gitlab.com

Which distribution ? Enterprise Edition EE or Community Edition. CE ??
=> i’m not sure about that. I have a free plan at the moment

Have you ever been able to successfully verify your email address?
=> according to my settings at gitlab my main email has never been confirmed

I noticed in the latest CE version that you can force email verification if you have administrator access. This can be done in the admin area when you can get in as administrator.
=> I have already tried this several times, I never got an e-mail

The same problem exists when I log in using my Github account.

Hope this helps,
Thank you

Still waiting for a fix on Gitlab.com, I created a ticket with Gitlab, but being a free user I guess I’ll wait forever. That’s sad as I wanted to convince my company to use Gitlab for repository, but seeing that I’m not even able to connect to my account that’s a bumper and I’ll probably have to tell them to use Github.
So far:

  • Login form tells me I need to confirm email.
  • Confirm link tell me my email is already confirm.
  • I try to reset password, never receive and email.
  • Using last know password, it does tell me I have wrong password.
  • Tried to connect with Google, tell me an account already exist and I cannot use the Google sign in way.

On desktop it straight tell me I have invalid password or login while I’m still using the same credentials as mobile, which tell me to confirm my email.

Looks like it’s part of this issue of account blocked waiting for email confirmation, with the provided solution below. But, the solution is not working for me. At all!

Turn out, reading the issue deeper that some people had issues with main email reverting to a previous one during that issue correction. Looks like it’s what happened to me too. Main email was changed to something I had as secondary (as far as I remember). All my Gitlab email, no matter which email I wrote in the confirmation email were sent there.

So for you folks, try remember a previous email you could have used (old work email, etc.), this is were email might be gathering…

Welcome to Gitlab! Or software, if you’re with me on this.

I hope it reverted to the most recently used email.

I hope. :woman_facepalming:
