Gitlab > Impossible to enable Group Access Token

Hi,

I’m trying to add a bot to upgrade automatically dependencies, Looks like they require a Group Access Token.

When I’m going to the group access token section it’s said " Group access token creation is disabled in this group. You can still use and manage existing tokens. [LeYou can enable group access token creation"

When I’m going to Group > General setting > Permissions and group features > Permissions, there is not checkbox " Users can create project access tokens and group access tokens in this group ."

What I’m doing wrong ? there documentation say

And I have

Let me know if you have a solution for me!

Best,

Ben

Hi @BenjaminBeguin  ,

On GitLab.com SaaS, Group access tokens are only available if you have Premium license tier or higher. (source). Sorry for any confusion.

Sorry for reviving this topic. I had the same issue und would like to make a suggestions here.

This part of the documentation should state that enabling group access tokens is a premium or self hosting feature only. As the Gitlab documentation usually does.

Sorry Greg, but this dismisses the underlying issue.

Nowhere in the console is this licensing restriction clear. The only instruction on the page Settings > Access Tokens is the following:

“You can enable group access token creation in group settings.”

If you click Group > Settings, there is absolutely no mention of Access Tokens.

The user is being given instructions, that to a non-premium member are, per the issue title, impossible.

Is it not possible to simply grey-out the Settings > Access Tokens and put it behind a paywall if you’re going to charge for it?

In documentation on top it is said that this feature is available for free version too. But I can’t see it.

I see it on my Gitlab self-hosted install. Select the group that you wish to create access tokens for, then click Settings → Access Tokens.

The document states:

Tier: Free, Premium, Ultimate
Offering: SaaS, self-managed

I agree that the error messages are misleading, and led me on a fool’s errand, looking for settings that did not exist in my account. It wasn’t until finding this conversation that I understood what was going on.

Thanks for the feedback. I have created an issue to propose documentation, and group settings updates. Group Access Token availability on GitLab.com SaaS is unclear (docs, settings) (#442671) · Issues · GitLab.org / GitLab · GitLab

FYI, the documentation has been updated with this MR. The issue remains open to find a solution for the product settings.

Came here to find out the same thing. Text in the UI is still not clear this is not available for some products…

Happy to see the docs are updated, but the UI of product is still misleading end-users.

Suggest continuing the discussion in the issue.
